The Seth Thomas Clock was established at the crossroads of Greensboro and Broad Street (now known as University Blvd) by the Merchants Bank and Trust Co., at the site of the Friedman and Rosenau building which had burned several years before. The building on the corner has seen many tenants over the years, but since 1925 "The Clock" has remained a constant. Little is known about the 99 year old clock, except that it was manufactured by the Seth Thomas Clock Company. Seth Thomas (1785 - 1859) was an American clock maker a pioneer of mass production at his Seth Thomas Clock Company. Seth Thomas Clock Company began producing clocks in 1813. The clock at Grand Central Terminal in New York City was also manufactured by the company. Seth Thomas Clock Company manufactured longcase clocks as well as mantel, wall, and table-top clocks during this period. It's also referred to as the "downtown clock" of "The First National Bank Clock", because the First National Bank Clock", because the Firs National Bank moved into the building in 1930. Tuscaloosa residents coined the phrase "meet me at the clock" used by several generations and has become one of Tuscaloosa's most recognizable and cherished landmarks.
